SEC G3 Explained: What It Means for Maths, Science & Physics Tuition

From 2027, Sec 4 students in Singapore will take the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) instead of the old O-Level. Under SEC, subjects are taken at G1, G2 or G3 level.
SEC G3 is the closest level to the old O-Level standard. Students taking G3 Maths, G3 Science or G3 Physics still need strong foundations, clear exam technique and consistent practice.
Why SEC G3 matters
The SEC system is not just a name change from O-Level. Under the old system, students were commonly grouped into Express, Normal (Academic), or Normal (Technical). Under the new SEC system, students instead take each subject at a level.

Is SEC G3 the same as O-Level?
SEC G3 is not exactly the same as O-Level, but it is the closest comparison to the old O-Level standard. So parents should not assume that SEC means the exam has become easier.
For students taking G3 subjects, especially Maths, Science and Physics, the expectations remain high. Students still need to understand concepts deeply, apply formulas correctly, solve unfamiliar questions, show clear working, avoid careless mistakes, and manage time under exam conditions.

The 2026 Sec 4 batch is the last O-Level batch. Students taking their national exam from 2027 onwards will take SEC. So if your child is in Sec 1, Sec 2 or Sec 3 in 2026, it is useful to start using the correct language: your child is preparing for SEC, not O-Level.
For students taking G3 subjects, the academic preparation should still be serious because G3 remains closest to the old O-Level level of demand.
