Our answer E Math (4052) covers core numeracy, algebra, geometry and statistics, and is taken by nearly all O-Level students. A Math (4049) is an elective that goes deeper — functions, coordinate geometry, trigonometric identities, and calculus (differentiation and integration) — and is the stronger foundation for JC or engineering-related Poly courses.
Our answer No. It's an elective offered to Sec 3 students who meet their school's internal cut-off, usually based on Sec 1–2 Math performance. Students who don't take A Math continue with E Math only.
Our answer Three strands: Algebra (quadratic functions, surds, polynomials, partial fractions, binomial theorem), Geometry & Trigonometry (coordinate geometry, circular measure, trig identities), and Calculus (differentiation, integration, and their application to kinematics). This content is unchanged going into 2026 and 2027.
Our answer Yes, but the impact is smaller than it sounds. 2026 is the final year the GCE O-Level is awarded. From 2027, the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) replaces it under Full Subject-Based Banding — students sit subjects at G1, G2 or G3 level instead of by stream. A G3 Math or A Math paper is set to the same standard as today's O-Level paper, so the syllabus and study approach stay the same — only the certificate name changes. Students currently in Sec 4 (2026) sit the last O-Levels; students currently in Sec 3 (2026) are the first SEC cohort.
Our answer Formally, A Math starts in Sec 3 — but it builds directly on Sec 2 algebra, so the safest window to start Sec Sch A Math tuition is right at the Sec 2 → Sec 3 transition, before the first calculus and trigonometry topics land.
Our answer This depends on the specific course and changes with each year's JAE/POSB cut-off tables, so we'd point parents to MOE's current admission figures rather than a fixed number — but as a rule, a strong A Math grade widens options for JC science streams and engineering-related Poly diplomas.
